FAQ

We receive various questions from customers concerning the services we offer, so we thought it may be helpful if we included the most commonly asked below.

Naturally if your question doesn’t appear here or you’d like to know more, then get in touch and we’d be delighted to help.

WHAT IS VEHICLE REMAPPING?

Remapping relates to the software held on your vehicle’s ECU (Engine Control Unit) for controlling your engine’s settings, and therefore its performance and economy characteristics, is changed by replacing the factory-loaded ‘engine settings instructions’ with new software.

HOW CAN REMAPPING BENEFIT MY VEHICLE?

The new instructions for controlling your vehicle’s engine settings will likely improve power and drivability such as improved throttle response, improved turbo performance (where fitted) and possibly improved economy.

WHY DOESN’T THE MANUFACTURER DO THIS FROM THE START?

The engine settings installed on the ECU by the manufacturer are designed to meet very strict emissions regulations, and also suit various driving situations and circumstances. With the same model of vehicle being sold in different territories around the world, it has to cope with various conditions such as extreme temperatures, using fuel of variable quality and being driven by people with differing driving styles.

Our remapping makes your vehicle suitable for you and your preferences. It’s like buying a tailor made suit as opposed to buying one ‘off the peg’.

HOW COMPLICATED IS A REMAPPING?

It’s very straightforward! For a simple ‘Stage 1’ remap, we don’t replace parts in your engine or dismantle anything. We connect your ECU to our diagnostic equipment and analyse the software already there. Next, software written especially for you is downloaded onto the ECU.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

It’s a non-invasive process that takes around two hours typically, although this does depend on engine type and the manufacturer.

I’D LIKE TO SAVE MORE FUEL – CAN YOU HELP?

Possibly; as you can see HERE we offer an ‘economy’ remapping option for most vehicles and engines.

I DON’T DRIVE A PERFORMANCE CAR, IS REMAPPING MY VEHICLE WORTH IT?

Almost certainly! In fact, many of our customers drive vehicles and cars such as compact hatchbacks, mid range saloons, family cars and light vans. You’ll likely notice an improvement in overall drivability and responsiveness with just our Stage 1 remap.

WON’T INCREASING THE POWER PUT A STRAIN ON MY ENGINE OR GEARBOX?

We only ever work within the parameters possible for your particular engine & vehicle, and much of the time a remap is designed to improve general drivability, not just outright power.

CAN A REMAP BE REVERSED?

Yes. We make a backup of the ‘factory’ software on your ECU and retain it in case you want your vehicle returned to its original state.

DO I NEED TO TELL MY INSURANCE COMPANY IF I’VE HAD A REMAPPING?

Yes as it counts as a modification.

WHAT’S THE PROBLEM WITH A DPF?

The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is designed to remove soot particles from diesel exhaust emissions in the light of ever-more stringent emissions regulations.

The problem in some cases is when the filter can’t operate for long enough at its optimum temperature in vehicles used for lots of short trips and stop/start driving. As a result the DPF loses its ability to filter the soot particles and it eventually affects the performance and fuel economy of the vehicle.

Once a DPF gets to this stage it may need expensive replacement.

HOW REDESIGN PERFORMANCE HELP?

We may be able to salvage your DPF by cleaning and/or replacing a component if something is malfunctioning (such as a faulty sensor mistakenly triggering a DPF warning light on your dashboard).

We conduct a full diagnostic test to see what the problem is and either replace the errant component or undertake a DPF regeneration
